This paper reviews research into social tagging and
folksonomy (as reflected in about 180 sources published
through December 2007). Methods of researching the
contribution of social tagging and folksonomy are described,
and outstanding research questions are presented. This is a
new area of research, where theoretical perspectives and
relevant research methods are only now being defined. This
paper provides a framework for the study of folksonomy,
tagging and social tagging systems. Three broad approaches
are identified, focusing first, on the folksonomy itself (and the
role of user tags in indexing and retrieval); secondly, on
tagging (and the behaviour of users); and thirdly, on the
nature of social tagging systems (as socio-technical frameworks).

Annotating is a pervasive element of scholarly practice scholars remain dissatisfied with the options available for annotating digital resources. The overarching goals of this project (consisting of multiple phases) are: To facilitate the emergence of a Web and Resource-centric interoperable annotation environment To demonstrate through implementations an interoperable annotation environment enabled by the interoperability specifications To seed widespread adoption by deploying robust, production-quality applications conformant with the interoperable annotation environment in ubiquitous and specialized services, tools, and content used by scholars -- e.g.: Zotero, AXE, LORE, Co-Annotea, Pliny; JSTOR, AustLit, MONK.
For those of you wondering what relations are and how to use them:
In BibSonomy, a relation consists of two tags, SUBTAG -> SUPERTAG. On the relations-page you'll find e. g. the following relation: 'algebra' -> 'mathematics'. It means that 'mathematics' is the supertag (also called a concept) of 'algebra', and the relation could be read as 'algebra is a subdiscipline of mathematics'.
You can define and manage your own relations on the edit_tags-page. Or you can enter a relation in the tag field while posting or editing a bookmark/publication. Just use SUBTAG->SUPERTAG (without any white space) as a tag.

As social tagging applications continuously gain in popularity, it becomes more and more accepted that models and tools for (re-)organizing tags are needed. Some first approaches are already practically implemented. Recently, activities to edit and organize tags have been described as "tag gardening". We discuss different ways to subsequently revise and reedit tags and thus introduce different "gardening activities"; among them models that allow gradually adding semantic structures to folksonomies and/or that combine them with more complex forms of knowledge organization systems. Moreover, power tags are introduced as tag gardening candidates and the personal tag repository TagCare is presented.

NewsCloud is a site experiment that fetches news from Google News, tries to find tags related to each news and presents a tag cloud of the daily news. During the news process, there's no human intervention.
