Description

Despite Colombia's high court move to liberalise abortion laws in 2006, many women are still putting their lives at risk by having backstreet terminations. Nearly 3 years after Colombia's high court partially depenalised abortion, government figures show that few women have had legal terminations. A lack of awareness about changes to abortion legislation, widespread refusal among doctors to do the procedure, coupled with conservative social attitudes are the main obstacles preventing women from receiving legal abortions, local campaigners say.
