Google möchte seinen Nutzern nur die besten und informativsten Suchergebnisse liefern. Je mehr Informationen über ein Suchergebnis-Snippet zur Verfügung gestellt werden, desto einfacher kann der Nutzer die Relevanz der Seite in Bezug auf die Suchanfrage feststellen. Mit Rich Snippets können Webmaster von Websites mit strukturiertem Content, etwa mit Beurteilungsportalen oder Branchenverzeichnissen, ihren Content kennzeichnen. Anhand dieser Kennzeichnung wird klar, dass jeder Textkörper mit einer Kennzeichnung einen bestimmten Datentyp darstellt, zum Beispiel einen Restaurantnamen, eine Adresse oder eine Bewertung.
Die Bereitstellung dieser Informationen hat keine Auswirkungen auf die Darstellung des Contents auf Ihren Seiten, unterstützt Google jedoch dabei, die Informationen besser zu verstehen und dadurch dem Nutzer besser zu präsentieren. Die Informationen können beispielsweise zur Erstellung von Rich Snippets für die Anzeige auf Seiten mit Suchergebnissen oder in einem Unternehmensprofil verwendet werden. Die ursprünglich von Familienministerin von der Leyen vorgeschlagene Ausblendung bzw. Sperrung von Webseiten soll durch einen Vertrag zwischen dem Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) und den Internet-Service-Providern (ISPs) als Zugangsanbieter zum Internet durchgeführt werden. Der dem CCC zugespielte Vertrag, der den ISPs bereits unterschriftsreif zugestellt wurde, verpflichtet die ISPs, ihren Kunden den Zugang zu einer geheimen und somit nicht rechtsmittelfähigen Liste von Domains zu verwehren.
Der Vertragsentwurf verpflichtet die ISPs, die nur werktags vom BKA übermittelten Zensurlisten geheimzuhalten. Somit sieht sich der CCC in seinen Befürchtungen [2] bestätigt, dass Frau von der Leyen zusammen mit Innenminister Schäuble und dem BKA eine Vorzensur ohne gesetzliche Grundlage einzuführen versucht.
Die Nationalstaaten gehen gegen illegale Inhalte im Internet nicht nur durch eine exterritoriale Ausdehnung ihres Strafrechts vor, sondern auch mit dem Versuch, das Netz gegen illegale Inhalte im Ausland abzuschotten. Das Projekt zeigt, dass derartige "Sperrverfügungen" gegen Accessprovider auf dem eigenen Hoheitsgebiet einen Zugriff der Bürger auf illegale Inhalte im Internet nur in begrenztem Maße und mit intensiven Freiheitseingriffen (insb. in das Fernmeldegeheimnis) verhindern können.
Die derzeitigen Zensurversuche einiger Internet-Service-Provider (ISP) in Nordrhein-Westfalen bestehen aus der Veränderung der DNS-Einträge auf dem DNS-Server des jeweiligen ISP.
