Das wichtigste Ergebnis der Studie ist: Junge Lesben, Schwule und Bisexuelle mit Behinderung werden häufiger diskriminiert. Zwar ist ihr Coming-out so facettenreich wie das von jungen Lesben, Schwulen und Bisexuellen ohne Behinderung, jedoch erleben sie öfter Ausgrenzung und ablehnende Reaktionen auf ihre Behinderung als auch auf ihre gleichgeschlechtliche Orientierung. Einige übertragen erfolgreiche Bewältigungsstrategien hinsichtlich ihrer Behinderung auf ihr Coming-out. Andere setzen sich durch negative Erfahrungen im Coming-out erstmals mit diskriminierenden Erfahrungen bezüglich ihrer Behinderung auseinander.
Noch vor einer Generation - also vor ca. 30 Jahren - behaupteten die meisten Fachleute, sexuelle Bedürfnisse dürften sich bei Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung nie entfalten; sexuelle Regungen, Ansätze zur sexuellen Befriedigung müßten "im Keim erstickt" werden. Man fürchtete, Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung könnten wegen ihrer Intelligenzmängel die Sexualität nicht beherrschen, wenn sie erst einmal "erwacht" ist, - sie seien in der Gefahr, zu "Triebtätern" zu werden.
Volker Schönwiese (1987, S. 112f) beschreibt die Situation wie folgt: "Sexualität ist das - im Vergleich zu seiner Bedeutung - am besten verdrängte und mit Vorurteilen belegte Thema, sowohl in der Sonderpädagogik, als auch in der Integrationsdiskussion." Dies sei deshalb "merkwürdig, da sich die Konsequenzen aus der Lebensgeschichte und die Qualität der gesamten Lebenssituation von behinderten Menschen im Problemfeld Sexualität und Partnerschaft am stärksten ausdrücken." (ebd.) Das Verdrängen der Sexualität behinderter Menschen entspreche einem "typischen Problem der Interaktion zwischen behinderten und nichtbehinderten Menschen. Es ist dies das Phänomen des 'so tun als wäre nichts', als wäre Behinderung nicht vorhanden, als wäre Sexualität nicht vorhanden." (ebd.) Die Lebensqualität behinderter Menschen ist abhängig vom sozialen Umfeld und ihren Betreuern. Sexualität wurde als Thema lange Jahre verdrängt und galt als Tabu. Dieses Tabu wird Stück für Stück aufgebrochen.
Das erste Mal mit sechzehn. Ganz normal. Ohne um Erlaubnis fragen zu müssen. Eine freie Entscheidung. Ganz normal. Doch die Idee vom Normalen verlangt nach einem Gegenstück, um sich als normal definieren zu können. Dieses Gegenstück ist das Andere. Das Abnormale. In unseren Köpfen ist das Abnormale aber nicht das Besondere. Es ist das Behinderte.
