Central Loghost Mini-HOWTO This page is simply a collection of open source tools you can use to glue together your own centralized (syslog) loghost. Included are example configuration settings so that you can configure your loghost in a manner similar to mine. There is very little that you need to read and understand in order to use these tools. Also, these tools are widely used and therefore easy to get help with on internet mailing lists. I established a centralized location for syslog collection in order to facilitate: Log reporting real time alerting periodic (several times per day) summary reporting Log storage long term archival for possible later analysis Tools used: UNIX hosts (Linux and Solaris) Modified logcheck script(s). Syslog-NG Swatch though I'm slowly moving to SEC, this page will be updated once I've completely switched Splunk for a GUI interface Stunnel
Any system administrator worth their salt has some kind of system for collecting and maintaining information about all the systems they're responsible for. Gathering that info by hand, especially when the systems are inherited, can be time-consuming. Or you could try out boxinfo, a Perl script that gathers most or all of the information you'd want in a few easy steps. Boxinfo is simple to run, just run it on any Linux system that has Perl and it will look for information about the disk space, processor, memory, network interfaces, mounted disks, versions of utilities, and general system environment. Once finished, it prints out an HTML page or page in Wikimedia format, and a debug file that shows all commands run and the output. This can be useful to identify Perl modules you might be missing to gather information.
Regular expressions is the term used for a codified method of searching invented or defined by the American mathematician Stephen Kleene. The syntax (language format) described is compliant with extended regular expressions (EREs) defined in IEEE POSIX 1003.2 (Section 2.8). EREs are now commonly supported by Apache, PHP4, Javascript 1.3 , MS Visual Studio, MS Frontpage, most visual editors, vi, emac, the GNU family of tools (including grep, awk and sed) as well as many others. Extended Regular Expressions (EREs) will support Basic Regular Expressions (BREs are essentially a subset of EREs). Most applications, utilities and laguages that implement RE's extend the capabilities defined. The appropriate documentation should always be consulted.
IOzone lets you benchmark your filesystem performance, seeing how well record IO occurs for files of various sizes. With IOzone you can see more detailed information than the read, write, and rewrite figures that Bonnie reports. IOzone is great at detecting areas where file IO might not be performing as well as expected.
SSH on multiple machines/servers using clusterssh simultaneously October 3rd, 2009 by WEBNESBAY This article provides you useful information to control multiple machines using single terminal using cluster ssh What is CLUSTER SSH? With ClusterSSH it is possible to make a SSH connection to multiple servers or machines to perform tasks from one single command window, without any scripting. The ‘cssh’ command lets you connect to any server specified as a command line argument, or to groups of servers (or cluster nodes) defined in a configuration file.
Setting up SSH keys for access without a password December 8th, 2006 If you manage more than one or two hosts, you likely have to type the same password too often. This can get quite annoying. SSH allows you to setup a public and private keypair. Using these keys, you can connect to any host which has the public key, from any host which has the private key, typing your password only once.

System requirements Before you download and install the Splunk software, read the following sections for the supported system requirements. If you have ideas or requests for new features to add to future releases, email Splunk Support. Also, you can follow our Product Roadmap. Refer to the download page for the latest version to download. Check the release notes for details on known and resolved issues. For a discussion of hardware planning for deployment, check out the topic on capacity planning in this manual.
Hobbit Monitor Welcome to the Hobbit Monitor project homepage. Hobbit is a system for monitoring servers and networks. It takes its inspiration from the Big Brother monitoring system, but unlike Big Brother it is designed to work well whether you need to monitor a small network with just a handful of hosts, or large networks with thousands of servers and network services. Hobbit is the successor to the bbgen toolkit, which has been available as an add-on to Big Brother since late 2002. The name change was decided upon when Hobbit acquired enough functionality to be a stand-alone product. The tools that formed the bbgen toolkit are still present in Hobbit and are quite important for it, so if you have used bbgen before Hobbit will seem quite familiar. What does Hobbit do ?
collectd – The system statistics collection daemon collectd is a daemon which collects system performance statistics periodically and provides mechanisms to store the values in a variety of ways, for example in RRD files. What does collectd do? collectd gathers statistics about the system it is running on and stores this information. Those statistics can then be used to find current performance bottlenecks (i.e. performance analysis) and predict future system load (i.e. capacity planning). Or if you just want pretty graphs of your private server and are fed up with some homegrown solution you're at the right place, too
One task that every one should do it is deleting useless files. If you do not, you will run out of disk space inevitably. Then, you will wonder where my disk space has gone? Filelight is the answer to you. Filelight creates an interactive map of concentric, segmented rings that help visualize disk usage on your computer. Like a pie-chart, but the segments nest, allowing you to easily see which files are taking up all your space.
Edit the following file to fix this problem Add or modify text as follows: # vi /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle = 0 # sysctl -p The above command will help the new settings to take effect.
Dear Frank, You can clear that particular connection by the following ways.First we have to convert that particular connection into hexa, for that take the netstat o/p using (to take the connection addr. in terms of ip address), #netstat -na |grep -i established Note down the Local
