Controlled immune responses rely on integrated crosstalk between cells and their microenvironment. We investigated whether targeting proinflammatory signals from the extracellular matrix that persist during pathological inflammation provides a viable strategy to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) benefits metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but its efficacy appears to be moderate as compared to placebo. The aim of our study was to assess the current literature on the clinical and structural efficacy of HCQ for joints in RA patients. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Previous studies suggest that RA activity is sensitive to seasonal changes. This study explored the influence of season on RA activity, particularly the distribution of affected joints, using a nationwide database in Japan. Open Access
We evaluated the discriminant capacity of the Lupus Low Disease Activity State (LLDAS) in post-hoc analysis of data from the BLISS-52 and BLISS-76 trials of belimumab in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been associated with a relative expansion of faecal Prevotellaceae. To determine the microbiome composition and prevalence of Prevotella spp. in a group of individuals at increased risk for RA, but prior to the development of the disease. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
This open‐label study further supports the evidence that patients with SMX respond both objectively and subjectively to IVIG therapy. Biologic studies suggest a role for T lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of the disease, and reveal the potential significance of TGFβ and interferon pathways. There are common, potentially modifiable, patient‐ and rheumatologist‐reported barriers to achieving RA disease control, including perceived medication risk aversion, suboptimal treatment adherence, and suboptimal patient‐physician communication regarding the benefits of tight control of disease activity in RA. Addressing these obstacles may improve adherence to goal‐directed RA care. To read the full article, log in using your MPFT NHS OpenAthens details.

The TITRATE trial seeks to test whether intensive management is valuable in achieving disease remission in moderately active rheumatoid arthritis. Intensive management is a complex intervention consisting of: 1) 12 x monthly appointments, 2) tailored ‘treatment support’ based on motivational interviewing techniques, 3) optimised medication (including the opportunity for biologics), 4) provision of a Patient Handbook, and 5) shared treatment planning. This study aims to understand: a) patients’ and practitioners’ views on the feasibility and acceptability of intensive management, and b) patients’ and practitioners’ experience of receiving/providing intensive management. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Treating early, intensively and to target leads to rapid disease control, preventing joint damage and loss of function in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We report the effect of such approach on patient‐reported outcomes and explore the contribution of rapid and persistent disease control on wellbeing after 1 year of treatment.
