An almanac or panjika, was once present in practically every Bengali household. The family worked in compliance with the advice offered there. The Panjika was something that the whole family believed in, and nothing was unimportant. The astrologers would have one think that the almanac's calendar could forecast almost everything under the sun. The Panjika publishers prospered as long as the Bengalis regarded this Panjika as a trustworthy source of knowledge. In an effort to improve almanacs' appeal and content relevancy, market competition grew. Thus, a directory with the required information started to be supplied together with the calendar. The narrative of their business was also conveyed by the Battala traders through the pages of the almanac. This calendar gave rise to the 'Popular Art' movement, which created works of art that the general public could afford. In Asit Pal's book Adi Panjika Darpan, an endeavour is undertaken to compile as many photos as possible— including advertisements—with diaries from 1842 to 1926.
