The Aalborg Centre for Problem Based Learning in Engineering Science and Sustainability is a category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO, approved by the General Conference of UNESCO in November, 2013. The Aalborg Centre was formally launched on May 26, 2014.
Globally, there is a need for educating engineers and scientist who can participate in development of sustainable innovations. This will imply a reform of engineering and science education to educate engineers with employable knowledge and skills.
The Aalborg Centre contributes to a reform strategy to higher education by combining Problem and Project Based Learning (PBL), Engineering Education Research (EER) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). This is a unique combination of Research & Development areas that are mutual dependent and complementary.
A driving force for the Aalborg Centre is the exemplary practice Aalborg University has for both PBL and integration of sustainability in engineering and science education. Since 1974, Aalborg University has practised PBL as the pedagogical learning methodology during the entire study period. Aalborg University has also the objective for all students to gain sustainability knowledge, skills and competences as a result of a series of sub-learning outcomes throughout the education.
The Aalborg Centre encompass the UNESCO Chair in Problem Based Learning (UCPBL) which was established in 2007 and is renown for its accomplishments in supporting the development of Problem Based and Project Based Learning in Engineering Education. The Obel Family Foundation has kindly offered to sponsor the UNESCO Centre in PBL for a period of five years with the main task to lead the Aalborg Centre.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) offers you a different way of learning from traditional university education. You work in small tutorial groups, engage in hands-on training and attend (far) fewer lectures. Under the supervision of a tutor, you team up with ten to fifteen students to tackle real-life challenges. PBL is an active way of learning that gives you better retention of knowledge, enhances your motivation and encourages you to develop skills that are essential for the labour market in the 21st century. In short: PBL is all about you, your tutors are very approachable and you learn together in a dynamic way, helping form you into an assertive professional.
Her child spent Friday night making labels for the clothes closet, despite the fact that we are truly in the infancy stage of this project. Take a moment to truly think about this. What does this picture represent? On the surface it looks like some white paper with labels on it. But it is so much more! It means that our scholars are invested. They have a purpose for their learning and I believe they will take that purpose to new heights that will impact others in a positive way.
It doesn’t matter that the word “sleeve” is misspelled (for now) because our students have brainstormed committees for this project. A committee of students will collaborate to determine which materials will be optimal for organization and functional for the space we have, label and organize items in the clothes closet and make flyers (with proper spelling and grammar). Another committee works on gathering donations and a third committee determines how students can access the clothes closet while maintaining their dignity and confidentiality at the same time. I say this not because these are my ideas, or what Mrs. Nolan and I have told students they need to work on. I say this because these are the ideas of our scholars!
The term purpose is defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Our scholars know their purpose for this project and in knowing their purpose they are not only learning the standards, but also building empathy and helping those in need in a positive way. Knowing their purpose is reinforcing their own value as little people who can make a BIG difference in the world!
