Abstract
Conductor vibrations caused by wind are a source of variable loads in overhead transmission lines.
Standardized tests of composite insulators envisage only the testing of their mechanical withstand at
the static tensile loads. Results of conducted research indicate however that the variable loads decrease
the long-term mechanical withstand strength of composite insulators. The knowledge of a model of
insulators mechanical strength characteristics at variable loads allows to make better assessments of
their quality and durability, therefore enabling better selection of insulators to the actual conditions of
operation.
