This study concerns the reception of the work of Petronius in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In contrast with the fortunes of the Satyricon – and of the Cena Timalchionis, which constitutes a fundamental part of this novel – in ancient times, in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the work of this author, who is difficult to identify, seems to have been poorly known and to have been passed on in fragmentary form. Nevertheless, the Satyricon was transmitted indirectly by satirical texts such as the Cena Cypriani, a basic text for understanding the genre of medieval French Latin satire, which became the primary source of certain sixteenth-century satirical works, such as the Euphormio of Barclay.
