Abstract
The Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities (ABLA) test (formerly called the AVC Discrimination Test) has proven to be a valuable tool for teachers and rehabilitation workers for selecting and sequencing training and work tasks for persons with profound, severe, and moderate developmental disabilities, as well as a useful screening tool for researchers for determining the ability level of participants prior to their exposure to various interventions. This paper summarizes the characteristics of the ABLA test, outlines the testing procedures, summarizes reliability and validity assessments of the test, presents evidence in support of 8 generalizations from research on the test, discusses possible changes and additions to the test to enhance its predictive validity and utility, and outlines implications of the ABLA test for teaching and research.
