Abstract
What are the features of online communities that lead people to participate in them? We present the results of three experiments that explored how time between posts, size of the community, evidence of moderation, and level of message interactivity affect participation and subjective evaluations of an online community. We found that only message interactivity affected whether or not participants posted comments to an online discussion. Time between posts, size of community, and evidence of moderation affected a variety of different subjective evaluations of online communities.
