Abstract
This article reports on some of the results of two research projects on Shakespeare: one on the creative modifi cation of phraseological units as a major source of his wordplay; and the other one on the translation of Shakespeare's comedies by the Extremaduran scholar José Mar\'ıa Valverde. The first part of the article offers a review of the most salient kinds of modification proposed in the specialized literature up until now, suggesting a few that might prove equally useful for analyzing this essential component of Shakespeare's style. In the second part, after a few methodological considerations on the procedure and strategies for rendering this type of expression in Spanish, the article off ers the traductological analysis of a selection of illustrative examples of these phraseologisms in José Mar\'ıa Valverde's translation
