Contraction of epistemic states: a general theory

.
Kluwer, (1999)

Abstract

A notion of an epistemic state is introduced as a generalization of common representations suggested for belief change. We define a general contraction operation on epistemic states and give a complete description of belief contraction functions generated by such operations. We describe also the difference between coherentist and foundationalist approaches in this setting and compare their `representation capabilities'.
