The primary outcomes from this study of psychotherapy for young people with bipolar disorder identified that most participants had continued to remain well. Given that up to 80% of people relapse within two years, it was important to establish how these participants described the process of staying well.. Parry and colleagues reexamine the 12 articles that comprise a widely cited, 2011 meta-analysis of community studies of pediatric bipolar that stated no differences exist between rates in the United States and other countries. This reexamination concludes not only are there in fact considerable differences in rates of bipolar disorder (both bipolar I disorder and bipolar spectrum disorder) but also the rates overall are lower than the meta-analysis stated...... A positive family history for bipolar disorder (BD) is presently the strongest predictor for BD. Over the last 2 decades, several longitudinal studies among children of patients with BD (bipolar offspring) identified converging evidence for early BD manifestations and associated parental and environmental risk factors.1 Risk for BD is elevated in bipolar offspring, but affected families want to know an individual risk estimate. Moreover, clinicians and policy makers want to know how to identify those youth at ultra high risk because this information may affect treatment and monitoring strategies. ‘Paediatric bipolar disorder’ (PBD) is a controversial diagnosis where often prepubertal children as well as adolescents, who may have a range of psychiatric disorders or symptoms, are diagnosed with a severe mental illness requiring lifelong medication. Clinically, it has often been applied in the United States but rarely in most other countries. A meta-analysis (Van Meter et al., Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 2011, 72, 1250) claimed that the prevalence of PBD was similar to adults at 1.8% with no difference between the United States and other countries. This conclusion has been highly cited. Login using your SSSFT NHS OpenAthens details for full text.

Owing to the genetic overlap between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, we aimed to assess domain-specific motor aberrations and disorder specificity among 7-year-old children with a familial risk of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder by comparing children in familial risk groups with each other and with children not in these risk groups. Mediation analyses can identify mechanisms of change in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). However, few studies have analyzed mediators of CBT for youth internalizing disorders; only one trial evaluated treatment mechanisms for youth with mixed mood diagnoses. This study evaluated mediators in the randomized trial of Child- and Family-Focused CBT (CFF-CBT) versus Treatment As Usual (TAU) for pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD), adjunctive to pharmacotherapy. Objective: To estimate the surveillance incidence of first-time diagnosis of narrow phenotype bipolar I disorder (NPBDI) in young people under 16 years by consultants in child and adolescent psychiatry (CCAP) in the British Isles and describe symptoms, comorbidity, associated factors, management strategies and clinical outcomes at 1-year follow-up.
