The transition from medical student to junior doctor is one of the most challenging in medicine, affecting both doctor and patient health. Opportunities to support this transition have arisen from advances in mobile technology and increased smartphone ownership.
Mobile learning (mLearning) devices (such as tablets and smartphones) are increasingly part of the clinical environment but there is a limited and somewhat conflicting literature regarding the impact of such devices in the clinical learning environment. This study aims to: assess the impact of mLearning devices in the clinical learning environment on medical students’ studying habits, attitudes towards mobile device supported learning; and the perceived reaction of clinicians and patients to the use of these devices as part of learning in the clinical setting.
Use of expert-led workshops plus consultation has been established as an effective strategy for training community mental health (CMH) clinicians in evidence-based practices (EBPs). Because of high rates of staff turnover, this strategy inadequately addresses the need to maintain capacity to deliver EBPs. This study examined knowledge, competency, and retention outcomes of a two-phase model developed to build capacity for an EBP in CMH programs. Use of podcasts has several advantages in medical education. Podcasts can be of different types based on their length: short (1–5 min), moderate (6–15 min) and long (>15 min) duration. Short-duration podcasts are unique since they can deliver high-yield information in a short time. The perceptions of medical students towards short-duration podcasts are not well understood and this study aimed to analyze the same. An exploratory analysis of students’ podcast usage and performance in summative assessments was also undertaken.
Open access. Health leadership and management capacity are essential for health system strengthening and for attaining universal health coverage by optimising the existing human, technological and financial resources. However, in health systems, health leadership and management training is not widely available. The use of information technology for education (ie, eLearning) could help address this training gap by enabling flexible, efficient and scalable health leadership and management training. We present a protocol for a systematic review on the effectiveness of eLearning for health leadership and management capacity building in improving health system outcomes.
We launched the Medicines Learning Portal website www.medicineslearningportal.org in 2016 to teach junior hospital pharmacists in the NHS how to solve clinical problems about medicines.
This free-to-view site was developed with support from Health Education England and many others.
By July 2017 it had received over 250,000 visits and the site is endorsed by the professional body for pharmacists, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
E-learning—the use of Internet technologies to enhance knowledge and performance—has become a widely accepted instructional approach. Little is known about the current use of e-learning in postgraduate medical education. To determine utilization of e-learning by United States internal medicine residency programs, program director (PD) perceptions of e-learning, and associations between e-learning use and residency program characteristics.
We’ve just heard that SSOTP will not be renewing their agreement with SSSFT LKS for library services for this financial year. Because of this we will be reviewing our Be Aware bulletins. It comes as an e-learning package designed to provide people who work in health and care settings – including NHS and care homes – with the skills and knowledge to conduct life story work. It can also be used by families and carers of people who have health and/or social care needs such as dementia.

There are increasing numbers of frail older patient cared for by our NHS.
In these times of reduced funding we felt a cheap freely available educational resource was needed for the whole team to improve their knowledge on looking after these frail patients .
We developed and run the MDTea Podcast as a result of this.
This is and will remain free to download to all users.
Each episode is a professionally produced radio show around 30 minutes long and covers a single topic from the perspective of the wider multi-professional team.
