In this exploratory pilot study we reanalyzed data from a previous randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of lamotrigine for bipolar II depression in which lamotrigine was not superior to placebo to determine if splitting the sample into melancholic and nonmelancholic subgroups revealed a significant treatment effect.. Open access. Patients with comorbid depression and personality disorders suffer from a heavy disease burden while tailored treatment options are limited, accounting for a high psychological and economic burden. Little is known about the effect of treatment dosage and type of psychotherapy for this specific co-morbid patient population, in terms of treatment-effect and cost-effectiveness. This study aims to compare treatment outcome of 25 versus 50 individual therapy sessions in a year. We expect the 50-session condition to be more effective in treating depression and maintaining the effect. Secondary objectives will be addressed in order to find therapy-specific and non-specific mechanisms of change.

The rates of suicidal ideation and completed suicide among adolescents have become increasingly alarming in recent years. Epidemiological studies indicate that a large portion of adolescents suffer from chronic pain, which research supports as a risk factor for suicidal ideation and behaviors. Further, psychological factors may account for the associations between chronic pain and suicidality. The current study sought to fill gaps in the literature on chronic pain and suicidality in adolescents, by examining whether depression mediates the links between various chronic amplified pain symptoms and suicidal ideation.. Sophie Graham and Jennifer Burgess explore the associations between persistent and severe postnatal depression in mothers and outcomes in their offspring.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for severe episodes of mood disorders. Temporary memory loss is a common side-effect, but ongoing discussions exist regarding potential long-term adverse cognitive outcomes. Only a few studies have examined the frequency of dementia in patients after ECT. The aim of this study was to examine the association between ECT and risk of subsequent dementia in patients with a first-time hospital diagnosis of affective disorder.. Mental health and cancer are closely linked—for example, patients with depression have a higher incidence of specific cancers1 and have a worse prognosis in observational studies than do patients without depression.2 What is not clear is whether this association can be positively influenced, either by the effective treatment of depression or by addressing the causative factors. Previous research3 suggests that depression is also linked with cardiovascular mortality and, in this case, effective treatment of depression appears to ameliorate this excess mortality.. Some authors have hypothesized that Treatment-Resistant Unipolar Depression (TRD-UP) should be considered within the bipolar spectrum disorders and that hidden bipolarity may be a risk factor for TRD-UP. However, there are neither studies comparing clinical and sociodemographic data of patients with TRD-UP versus Bipolar (BP) disorders nor are there any examining differences versus Bipolar type I (BP-I) and Bipolar type II (BP-II).
There is no screening tool for major depressive disorder (MDD) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in asylum-seekers or refugees (ASR) that can be readily administered by non-mental health workers. Hence, we aimed to develop a brief, sensitive and rapidly administrable tool for non-mental health workers to screen for MDD and PTSD in ASR.
The risk of relapse in major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with high worldwide disease burden. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and its modifications might be effective in relapse prevention. The aim of this review was to evaluate the efficacy of these treatments for reducing relapse of MDD.
Depression after hip fracture in older adults is associated with worse physical performance; however, depressive symptoms are dynamic, fluctuating during the recovery period. The study aim was to determine how the persistence of depressive symptoms over time cumulatively affects the recovery of physical performance..
