In late 2005, the dotOrganize team embarked on an unprecedented effort to map the current state of online technology in the social change sector. Over nine months, dotOrganize gathered survey and interview input from more than 400 social change groups, technology providers, and nonprofit technology capacity builders. Surveys and interviews were designed to identify what organizers need to support their goals, what tools are currently available, what does and does not work, and what's needed to strengthen the long-term capacity of the sector.
Great effort was made to obtain input from organizations with smaller budgets: 75% of organizations surveyed operate on annual budgets of $1 million or less; 29% on budgets under $100,000.
The full report provides a detailed view of the sector's present situation, gives voice to the organizers who are struggling with these issues, and offers recommendations for filling current gaps in strategy, software development, and tool adoption paths.

"Distributive leadership" can be defined as "the distribution of power through a collegial sharing of knowledge, of practice, and reflection." - "Distributive leadership is most successful if the leadership roles and responsibilities are negotiated rather than delegated; distributive leadership harnesses individual strengths and abilities appropriate for the required leadership, irrespective of formal position; and a distributive approach provides [individuals] an opportunity to take a leadership role, ascertain capability, and further develop these aptitudes before acquiring a formal position."

InfoWorld's annual BOSSIES recognize the best free and open source software the world has to offer to businesses, IT professionals, and productive individuals who rely on computers to get work done. The 2008 BOSSIE winners include 60 products in eight categories covering business and productivity applications, development tools, middleware, networking, security, and storage. Credit goes to Mario Apicella, James R. Borck, Victor R. Garza, Rick Grehan, Mike Heck, Martin Heller, and the rest of the InfoWorld Test Center for these selections. The breadth and quality of free software offerings is in fact overwhelming, and many of our choices were difficult. Please let us know what we missed.
