This paper sets out to study phraseological translation as a parameter to assess the idiomaticity of the Spanish dubbing language. The corpus analysed consists of a number of transcripts of the aired episodes of the American TV series Friends and their dubbed versions in Spanish.
In this article, the author is considering the often neglected issues of viewership in subtitling, particularly for film. He begins with a review of the extent of subtitling audiences around the world, moving on to considering the cognitive efforts involved in the viewing of subtitled material. This includes a critical review of current theoretical analysis.
