Open access. Increasing attention to palliative care for the general population has led to the development of various evidence-based or consensus-based tools and interventions. However, specific tools and interventions are needed for people with severe mental illness (SMI) who have a life-threatening illness. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the scientific evidence on tools and interventions in palliative care for this group.

Dyadic interactions may be affected by the mental health of either partner; however, both partners’ symptoms are typically not considered simultaneously in observational studies of parent–child relationships. Using the actor–partner interdependence model (APIM), we examine how depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in mothers and adolescent daughters predict their own and each other’s relational behaviors (warmth, hostility, communication) during interactions, and whether partners’ relational behaviors predict changes in symptoms 1 month later.. Commentary. Rarely has there been so much anticipation for a new antidepressant as has been seen for intranasal esketamine, the putatively more effective enantiomer of ketamine. This reflects the exposure given to studies on the off-label intravenous use of racemic mixture ketamine for refractory depression and its ensuing availability via ketamine clinics and infusion centers. Intranasal esketamine represents a novel way of administering the agent and is the subject of the report in this issue by Popova et al. (1).. Open access.Women are more susceptible to major depressive disorder (MDD). A possible explanation is that women have a trait tendency to engage in a ruminative response style. Depending on cognitive model of depression, attention bias, memory bias and self-referential bias were closely related among depressed patients. Previous studies have explored the neural mechanism of the cognitive biases by using amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) or functional connectivity (FC), and few combined these two metrics, especially focusing on female patients.
Open access. Major depressive disorder is characterised by low mood and poor motivation. Literature suggests that increased physical activity has positive effects on alleviating depression. Fitness-tracking devices may complement behavioural activation (BA) therapy to improve physical activity and mental health in patients with depression.

Depression screening among children and adolescents is controversial, and no clinical trials have evaluated benefits and harms of screening programs. A requirement for effective screening is a screening tool with demonstrated high accuracy. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the accuracy of depression screening instruments to detect major depressive disorder (MDD) in children and adolescents. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for severe late-life depression; however, ECT-induced cognitive side effects frequently occur. The cholinergic system is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis. We systematically reviewed the evidence for acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (Ache-I) to prevent or reduce ECT-induced cognitive side effects. Login using your SSSFT NHS OpenAthens for full text. Health specialists at the University of York have found than acupuncture treatment can boost the effectiveness of standard medical care, lessening the severity of chronic pain and depression.
This debate article aims to evaluate whether current diagnostic and therapeutic options for suicidal geriatric patients with depression suffice, and which adapted strategies might be helpful. We hope to encourage clinicians to consider special approaches when treating the elderly.
The review showed that robust evidence for the effectiveness of iCBT as an add-on to TAU is still limited, with results not necessarily generalisable to people from different backgrounds based on age, gender, education, and mental healthcare settings. Clearly more research is needed, as remotely delivered, self-guided iCBT has the promise to increase accessibility and be more cost-effective.
Depression in mothers is recognized as a major public health problem that is multigenerational in its impacts. Depression undermines parenting by interfering with attachment and impeding the mother’s ability to recognize and respond to child cues and needs, as well as create the nurturing and stimulating environment required for optimal child development. In this randomized clinical trial, the Treatment Initiation and Participation Program participants were 3 times more likely to be at least 80% adherent to their antidepressant pharmacotherapy at both 6 and 12 weeks. The Treatment Initiation and Participation Program did not have a sustained effect on depression; however, participants who reported 80% adherence at both 6 and 12 weeks showed greater improvement in depression severity by 24 weeks.
