Open access. Although currently available evidence suggests that physical exercise can be beneficial for depressed patients and might be comparable to antidepressant treatment, the best way of implementing this recommendation in clinical practice is not known. This study therefore aims to ascertain the non-inferiority of supervised physical exercise to antidepressant drug treatment, in terms of reducing depressive symptoms among patients presenting with clinical criteria of a depressive episode (ICD-10), across a follow-up period of 6 months.

The Mental Health Foundation has published a report focusing on stress, which was the theme for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week.
The report, Stress: are we coping? presents data from a survey of over 4,000 adults, and collates information from other organisations' research. While the report looks at all aspects of stress in the UK, the importance of work-related stress is highlighted, along with some tips on prevention and management.
People with depression are twice as likely to smoke and are less responsive to standard tobacco treatments as compared with the general population. A Cochrane systematic review of randomised controlled trials of smoking cessation treatment for smokers with current or historical depression found that adding mood management to usual smoking treatment improved quit rates. However, the review did not examine if variation in intervention delivery or intervention functions impacted on treatment effectiveness.
