Es ist weniger das, was gemeinhin als Religion wahrgenommen wird, das zu "Ehrenverbrechen" führt, sondern ein speziellerer Glaube, nämlich der an die Familie.
Der Weltbevölkerungsbericht der Uno geht davon aus, dass es weltweit zu mehr als 5000 "Ehrenmorden" im Jahr kommt. Weil allerdings viel darauf hindeutet, dass nur ein kleiner Teil der Delikte zur Anzeige kommt und ein größerer als Selbstmorde und Unfälle getarnt oder – vor allem in ländlichen Gegenden – einfach ignoriert wird, gibt es Schätzungen, die von einer bis zu sechsstelligen Dunkelziffer ausgehen.
