Despite extensive research examining burnout in psychiatric nursing staff, literature exploring key predictors of burnout in secure psychiatric settings has been relatively neglected. Research has yet to explore burnout in these settings by adopting previously identified predictors such as support or the ward environment.

One of the five overarching principles of the Mental Health Act: Code of Practice is to provide patients with care and treatment which is least restrictive whilst encouraging recovery and promoting independence. However, there is limited research which explores the application of these principles within a medium secure unit. The aims of the research were to explore what are patient’s experiences of least restrictive practices and to what extent do they perceive that least restrictive practices maximise their independence and recovery.. Mental health care personnel have one of the highest rates of workplace violence of any occupational class in the United States, with psychiatric aides having a rate that is 69 times higher than the national mean; furthermore, aggression on the part of psychiatric patients that targets other patients is a substantial component of morbidity and even mortality rates in inpatient psychiatric institutions. Much research has focused on such topics as the demographic characteristics of staff most likely to be victimized and the identification of patients most likely to become aggressive, but very little attention has been devoted to the temporal architecture of aggressive behavior. This study examined the temporal patterning of violent and aggressive behavior on an inpatient psychiatric ward over a one-year period. . Open access. Recovery-orientated care is becoming generally accepted as the best practice, and continued development in the ways it is practiced is necessary to ensure improvement of ongoing care. Forensic patients often experience double stigmatization (the dual stigma of mental illness and offending behaviour) and during admission to hospital may lose touch with their community supports. While working through their personal recovery, patients develop therapeutic relationships with their multidisciplinary team members. When positive, these relationships can enhance a patient’s recovery.

Women's Enhanced Medium Secure Services (WEMSS) are bespoke, gender-sensitive services which opened in the UK in 2007 at three pilot sites. This study is the first of its kind to explore the experiences of WEMSS staff, directly comparing them to staff in a standard medium secure service for women. People with serious mental illness (SMI) are at risk of dying many years earlier than the general population. Providing an effective, cost-efficient healthcare service requires a holistic approach, and improving the physical health of people with SMI should be integral to all healthcare roles. It is important for nurses to identify and understand the barriers that people with SMI may experience when accessing physical healthcare.
