Um die neuen Handels- und Investitionsverhandlungen zwischen den beiden Handelspartnern zu eröffnen hat am Montag (30.) EU-Kommissarin für Handel Cecilia den mexikanischen Wirtschaftsminister Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal getroffen.
Seit Juni 2013 wird das transatlantische Freihandelsabkommen zwischen der EU und den USA verhandelt. Die Kritiker befürchten einen Abbau bestehender Standards im Umwelt- und Verbraucherschutz und bei den Arbeitnehmerrechten. Die Befürworter rechnen mit großen Wohlfahrtsgewinnen für beide Seiten. Tatsächlich sollte die Bedeutung des Abkommens aber nicht überschätzt werden, da die Handelsbeziehungen sowie der Austausch von Dienstleistungen und Direktinvestitionen mit den USA für die einzelnen EU-Länder weitaus weniger wichtig sind als ihre wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen innerhalb der EU.
