This paper reviews research into social tagging and
folksonomy (as reflected in about 180 sources published
through December 2007). Methods of researching the
contribution of social tagging and folksonomy are described,
and outstanding research questions are presented. This is a
new area of research, where theoretical perspectives and
relevant research methods are only now being defined. This
paper provides a framework for the study of folksonomy,
tagging and social tagging systems. Three broad approaches
are identified, focusing first, on the folksonomy itself (and the
role of user tags in indexing and retrieval); secondly, on
tagging (and the behaviour of users); and thirdly, on the
nature of social tagging systems (as socio-technical frameworks).
In Why Is There Philosophy of Mathematics At All? one of the grand eminences of the philosophy of science, now retired, offers a lively, discursive tour of some of the broad landscapes of the philosophy of mathematics...
Note: I wrote this post for an internal team blog, but thought it was worth sharing more widely. Part of getting to good code reviews is some up front discussion about trade-offs and implications for bigger architectural changes. I think of code review as when “my” code becomes “our” code – for architecture, those conversations…
This report will demonstrate the presence of technical bias in several normal tissue RNA-seq experiments and investigate the ability of different normalization methods to address this bias.
PhD Candidate Kamila Misiejuk and SLATE Director, Professor Barbara Wasson have completed a comprehensive State of the Field Report on Learning Analytics.
This year was huge for me in the field of machine learning and computer vision in particular. A bit more than a year ago I would never believe that I would spend a week abroad not…
Dueling neural networks. Artificial embryos. AI in the cloud. Welcome to our annual list of the 10 technology advances we think will shape the way we work and live now and for years to come.
The joyous lion of theoretical computer science Boaz Barak is reporting on Avi Wigderson's book Mathematics and Computation which is on Avi's homepage. I read through an earlier version and it is highly recommended! Let me also recommend Avi's earlier survey on interaction between CS and math.
In the spring of 2010, I was privileged to have a conversation with Simon Schaffer, who pointed me to the work of a sociologist and philosopher of science named Harry Collins. This year, I discovered and read Collins' new book, Tacit and Explicit Knowledge, and a somewhat older book, The Shape of Actions (co-authored with…
