Introduction: Why do we need a definition? Humanities research is focused on cultural artefacts such as texts, images or physical objects. Usually they are kept in libraries, archives and museums and are thus not encountered as original material objects; rather, scholars work with surrogates of them created especially to make them more accessible and to facilitate research. Syllabus for 2018 edition of DH285: Introduction to Digital Humanities, taught at Michigan State University as a required course in the undergraduate Digital Humanities minor. The course is a survey introduction to the field, has no prerequisites, and is open to students from any major. Thirteen students were in the course.
