"As I always say, there is good online and bad online just as there is good face-to-face and bad face-to-face (f2f). As Hodges et al. point out, online and f2f cannot be inherently bad or good.
The effectiveness would be based on how the mode is used (or how interaction within the mode is structured), for what tasks or purpose, with what technologies or media characteristics, within what contexts or systems, and for what audience or agents.
The question you could ask:
How do I take advantage of the online medium and associated technologies to effectively support my students' learning?
This site describes a model of authentic learning, based on 9 key elements that can be used to design authentic learning environments. It has been created to support courses and units using authentic learning and authentic e-learning.

To help campuses ensure that their online courses are learner centered and well designed, a team of Open SUNY staff and campus stakeholders has designed the OSCQR rubric, a customizable and flexible tool for online course quality review.
The OSCQR rubric specifically targets online course design. The OSCQR rubric is unique and differs from other online course quality rubrics in several ways. It is not restricted to mature online courses. The rubric can be used formatively with new online faculty to help guide, inform, and influence the design of their new online courses, and, it is non-evaluative.
Conceptually, the rubric and the online course review and refresh process are implemented as a professional development exercise designed to guide online faculty to use research-based effective practices and standards to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of their online course design, rather than as an online course evaluation, or quality assurance procedure.

The transition from medical student to junior doctor is one of the most challenging in medicine, affecting both doctor and patient health. Opportunities to support this transition have arisen from advances in mobile technology and increased smartphone ownership.
Mobile learning (mLearning) devices (such as tablets and smartphones) are increasingly part of the clinical environment but there is a limited and somewhat conflicting literature regarding the impact of such devices in the clinical learning environment. This study aims to: assess the impact of mLearning devices in the clinical learning environment on medical students’ studying habits, attitudes towards mobile device supported learning; and the perceived reaction of clinicians and patients to the use of these devices as part of learning in the clinical setting.

Use of expert-led workshops plus consultation has been established as an effective strategy for training community mental health (CMH) clinicians in evidence-based practices (EBPs). Because of high rates of staff turnover, this strategy inadequately addresses the need to maintain capacity to deliver EBPs. This study examined knowledge, competency, and retention outcomes of a two-phase model developed to build capacity for an EBP in CMH programs. Use of podcasts has several advantages in medical education. Podcasts can be of different types based on their length: short (1–5 min), moderate (6–15 min) and long (>15 min) duration. Short-duration podcasts are unique since they can deliver high-yield information in a short time. The perceptions of medical students towards short-duration podcasts are not well understood and this study aimed to analyze the same. An exploratory analysis of students’ podcast usage and performance in summative assessments was also undertaken.

Open access. Health leadership and management capacity are essential for health system strengthening and for attaining universal health coverage by optimising the existing human, technological and financial resources. However, in health systems, health leadership and management training is not widely available. The use of information technology for education (ie, eLearning) could help address this training gap by enabling flexible, efficient and scalable health leadership and management training. We present a protocol for a systematic review on the effectiveness of eLearning for health leadership and management capacity building in improving health system outcomes.
We launched the Medicines Learning Portal website www.medicineslearningportal.org in 2016 to teach junior hospital pharmacists in the NHS how to solve clinical problems about medicines.

Portrait of a Life was developed by us as a way of looking into the rich histories of people with dementia in order to offer the most appropriate care which considers their pasts, preferences, and personalities.
It comes as an e-learning package designed to provide people who work in health and care settings – including NHS and care homes – with the skills and knowledge to conduct life story work. It can also be used by families and carers of people who have health and/or social care needs such as dementia.

There are increasing numbers of frail older patient cared for by our NHS.
In these times of reduced funding we felt a cheap freely available educational resource was needed for the whole team to improve their knowledge on looking after these frail patients .
We developed and run the MDTea Podcast as a result of this.
This is and will remain free to download to all users.
Each episode is a professionally produced radio show around 30 minutes long and covers a single topic from the perspective of the wider multi-professional team.
Health Education England has worked with UCLPartners and NHS mental and physical health experts to develop a suite of educational material for use across primary and secondary NHS health settings.
“Breaking Down the Barriers” aims to support education across the NHS workforce by providing the training materials to enhance existing skills, increase knowledge for early recognition, assessment, management and signposting of mental and physical health needs of patients.

The Skills Platform has launched a Clinical eLearning Hub to provide learners with a central location to find and access courses for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.
Clinical eLearning whether paid-for or free is often dispersed across various providers and host platforms, making it difficult for staff to know where to find clinical content. The new hub has been created to help staff such as GPs, dentists, pharmacists and other clinical specialists to reduce the time taken finding the courses they need. Nurses and other specialists in secondary care can also easily find courses to support CPD and revalidation.
Health Education England’s e-Learning for Healthcare (HEE e-LfH) programme has launched an e-learning resource that helps describes the role of clinical and educational supervisors and how they work with postgraduate medical trainees employed under the new 2016 contract. The e-learning supports educational and clinical supervisors in understanding their role and how they can support their trainees under the new contract.
The e-learning session is designed to support educational and clinical supervisors but is relevant to all those involved in the management of trainees, including trainees themselves. The development of this e-learning session involved both NHS Employers and the British Medical Association.
IHealth Education England (HEE) has worked with Public Concern at Work and the National Guardian Office to develop a package of online learning resources that aim to encourage and support NHS staff to raise and respond to concerns.
Available on HEE’s e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) website, two e-learning sessions promote relevant policies, procedures, best practice and available support in relation to raising and responding to concerns.
Health Education England has released an online e-learning resource for educational and clinical supervisors involved in the implementation of the 2016 contract for doctors and dentists in training.
The resource is designed to train educational and clinical supervisors on fulfilling their role in the 2016 contract and includes information around work scheduling, exception reporting, and work schedule reviews.
The Guide contains practical suggestions, references and sample templates that can be accessed throughout the Quality Assurance Framework document by clicking on the link provided. The Guide has not been created as a stand-alone document.
In this online resource, the model used for course development is a project team-based structure. The framework still can be used by those who have a "lone ranger" approach to the course development process. All of the resources can be used as they are and are in development, based on the feedback received and ongoing research in the field. You can evaluate/modify your courses using the checklists provided in this module.
If not designed with accessibility in mind, Learning Management Systems (LMS) can pose accessibility problems for students and instructors with disabilities. Depending on the features enabled for a given course, students with disabilities could find that participating independently and effectively is nearly impossible. Some LMS tools—Discussions, Quizzes, Chat, or Wiki tools, for instance—can be more problematic than others. Learning Management Systems are becoming richer and more complex applications, and if they are not designed with accessibility in mind, it can be next to impossible to make them accessible and usable to users with various needs.
Important LMS features depends on your specific requirements. For example, a LMS solution that is successful for a University it does not mean that it will be successful for a large organization. This is why I listed the 99 LMS features in alphabetical order and not in an importance order.
Background: The optimal design of pedagogical strategies for e-learning in graduate and postgraduate medical education remains to be determined. Video-based e-learning use is increasing, with initial research suggesting that taking short breaks while watching videos (independent of answering test questions) may improve learning by focusing attention on the content presented. Interspersed test questions may also improve knowledge acquisition and retention.
