Online-Tutorials, FAQ-Listen, E-Mail-Formulare und Live-Chats bieten Hilfe bei der Informationsrecherche und –beschaffung, weisen jedoch spezifische Nachteile auf: Online-Tutorials sind aufwändig in der Erstellung, bei einer FAQ muss der Nutzer seine Frage den vorgegebenen Inhalten zuordnen, Live-Chats binden Auskunftspersonal und bei E-Mail-Auskünften ist der zeitliche Verzug bei der Antwort groß.
Mit einem Chatbot, also einer virtuellen Figur, die die natürlichsprachig eingegebenen Fragen der Benutzer erkennt und auf Grundlage ihrer Wissensbasis rund um die Uhr beantwortet, können diese Nachteile ausgeglichen und ein zeitgemäßer Beitrag zur Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz geleistet werden.
Die Entwicklung eines solchen Chatbots wirft Fragen der Computerlinguistik, des Grafik-Designs und der Kommunikationspsychologie auf, die hier diskutiert und am Beispiel des Chatbot-Projektes der SUB Hamburg illustriert werden..(2006)
